Questions have arisen recently about CNYLT's hunting policy, and
after much discussion, the Board thought it would be wise to
clarify our policy. There is no hunting on any CNYLT property. We
do not grant, nor have we ever granted, anyone permission to
hunt.
Though it is a very controversial issue, there are many
practical reasons for our policy. We do not wish to take an
ethical stand on hunting; some of our members hunt, others do
not. Our discussions have produced the following:
|
Reasons for not permitting hunting:
- Many people have given us land
because we do not permit hunting.
- Many of our properties are
small and are in residential areas.
- Hunting and some forms of
recreation, such as hiking, are incompatible.
|
Reasons for permitting hunting:
- There is a deer overpopulation
problem.
- The deer are eating all of the
wildflowers and destroying the understory shrubs.
- Many people would give us new
property if we permitted hunting.
|
Finally there is one overarching
reason to forbid hunting on our properties: our insurance
carrier will not provide coverage if we permit hunting on our
properties.
Therefore, to protect the public and ourselves, we cannot permit
hunting of any animal in any form.
